GRACE AND COVENANTS
"But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shall come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee." (Gen 6:18)
Our opening text is about the covenant that God entered into with Noah. God told him that with him He will establish His covenant and he and his wife and his sons' wives shall enter into the ark for their preservation from the flood that the Lord was bringing upon the earth to destroy every living creature from the face of the earth.
This covenant that God made with Noah among others like the Adamic, the Abrahamic and even the Mosaic covenant were all still based on God's grace and not on any human effort.
This is very important, because some folks have tried to limit grace only to the New Testament, as though grace was not in the Old Testament. But if grace was not in the Old Testament no man could have related with God in then. For all of humanity's dealing with God has been by God drawing man unto himself and not just man seeking after God, and that is grace.
Thus, in Genesis 6:8, the word of God declares that "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." And it was this grace that Noah found in the eyes of the Lord that brought him into covenant with the Lord which preserved him, his family and the whole earth.
And we see that all the covenants of the Bible were based on God's grace, as He was the one who always reached out to humanity to initiate a relationship with them by the various biblical covenants we read of in the Bible. Nevertheless, God's grace was limited in the Old Testament, but it is superabundant in the New Testament. Glory to God! Hallelujah!
